Kangra is connected to plains via Kangra Valley Railway. The trains start from Pathankot in Punjab and culminate at Joginder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh. On the way they stop at Kangra exactly for two minutes. However, some of these trains also culminate at Baijnath Paprola. At present, the railway operates through 762 mm narrow gauge track. However, the government has plans to convert the route into 1676 mm railway track and extend the line first to Mandi and then to Ladakh.
Kangra Valley Railway
The work on Kangra Valley Railway started in 1926; it was ultimately commissioned in 1929. It is one of the two narrow gauge railway tracks that runs through the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh; the other being Kalka-Shimla Railway. However, unlike the Kalka-Shimla railway track, which runs mostly through the tunnels, the Kangra Valley Railway lines runs mostly through the open mountain side. There are only two tunnels to cross Truly, Kangra Valley is one of the most picturesque valleys in the world and the engineers who had laid down the lines years ago kept that in mind. That is why instead of digging tunnels through the mountains, the engineers had taken the lines meandering through the hills. May be that is why it takes longer to reach Kangra by train, but that is compensated by the beauty through which the train chugs in. Indeed, the entire route commands a glorious view, but it takes a turn for the better once the train leaves Nurpur. That is why one should travel to Kangra at least once by train.
